Identifont? More like Iwantafont!

Identifont is a well-known web service for identifying fonts by describing letters. You look at a font sample, tell the site what characteristics certain letters have, and based on its database, it tells you some candidates.

Identifying fonts is important. If you enjoy fonts as much as I do, you’ll often see signs and posters around town with beautiful typography, and there isn’t anything that will calm your restless curiosity than knowing exactly what font that sign is in. Plus, if cloud classification isn’t enough evidence, I’m finding myself increasingly aware of my desire to identify and classify things.

Anyway, although knowing things is important, equally important is the ability to create things. Let’s say I’m going in to meet with a web design client, and he describes to me how he wants his logo to look. If he describes the way he wants certain letters to look, I can input that to Identifont, and, without too much searching, I’ve found the perfect font for the job.

So, here’s my advice: don’t think of Identifont as a way to identify fonts anymore; in addition, utilize it to discover new ones to your fancy.
