He Fronts Quite Often, You Know.

by Jeff on 31 December 2008

So I was surfin’ the series of tubes the other day and I found the most awesome of awesome musical genres: nerdcore. The unofficial founder of this subgenre (technically) is Mc Frontalot. A pretty funny song of his is It Is Pitch Dark, and he’s a pretty adept freestyler, in fact better, I think, than most famous rappers, who just yell their name a lot and inform you that they are about to rap. Some other pretty good nerdcore artists are MC Hawking and Optimus Rhyme. Sorry for all the links, but I hope you enjoy the music. Hip-hop songs about moderating forums are awesome :P

Dear Britain

by Steven on 23 December 2008

It has been fun knowing you, but with the recent alien invasion, I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of you around anymore.

I regret to inform you that we won’t be able to help you out on this one, the risk is just too great. I can only advise that you prepare your troops and scramble your fighter jets as soon as possible, and warn all of your citizens of the invasion. Armageddon has come 4 years early, and unfortunately, it’s you that had to be hit.

We cannot doubly risk the lives of our troops in such a cosmically-scaled battle, and I really don’t think that we would survive. The War on Aliens has started, and my military advisers tell me that with the strength of their army as it is, the whole world probably won’t be around even to see the New Year.

We’ve known of these things living in the oceans, but we’d never thought they’d make it on land. SETI tells me that they’ve received lots of signals from distant stars, obviously awakening their underwater army. It’s sad to see them attack you, Britain, because you were really one of the world’s favorite countries, and you always had the best costumes at the UN Halloween parties. Life won’t be the same without you, and it will always be a depressing reminder to look at a world map and see not a country but an island consumed by isopod invaders.

I wish you and your countrymen the best of luck in battle.

Love,
The US

You Twit

by Steven on 20 December 2008

You can keep up with the daily haps of me and Jeff on Twitter now. You know, if you have an obsession like that - the kind where you like to know what thousands of people are doing right now. It’s ok, I didn’t say it was weird*.

Here’s Jeff and this one’s mine. Follow us and we may just follow you back.

I’m also going to let you know that we are not taking breaks this holiday season! Comics will continue regularly! However, I’m going to warn you that these comics may possibly be holiday-themed. Most likely Christmas-themed.

* It’s weird

Backreaction

by Steven on

I’d like to share something with you guys who might be interested in this kind of thing.

Backreaction is a blog by two theoretical physicists who have some very interesting things to say. Their What if… advent series has been particularly interesting.

Check them out, they challenge imaginations.

Why?!?!

by Jeff on

I can’t honestly say that I hate Keanu Reeves, but I am seriously pissed about his casting as Spike Siegel in the new live-action Cowboy Bebop movie. Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorite Anime series of all time, and I seriously don’t think that this was a good choice. First of all, visually, Keanu does not resemble Spike at all too me. Second of all, Keanu’s character (the silent, slightly dumbfounded, somber chosen one) doesn’t fit Spike, a witty, lackadaisical butt-kicker, at all. Now that I think about it, I can’t think of a single actor that would play Spike well (except for the obvious Johnny Depp, but, bleh). Any ideas?!? We have to save this movie now!

Thought-Provocation in Comics

by Jeff on 17 December 2008

So, I just got back from a borrower my copy of The Oath, a short series featuring Dr. Strange, written by Brian K. Vaughan. The reason I bring this up is because The Oath is a great example of comics, which are treated by many non-readers as very flat and superficial, dealing with thought-provoking issues.

The premise of the comic is essentially this: Dr. Strange (who is often criticized by readers and writers as being too overpowered, the deus ex machina of the Marvel universe, if you will) stumbles upon the Panacea in an alternate dimension. Obviously overjoyed, the good doctor plans to use the cure-all to end many of the worlds problems. However, through multiple unfortunate encounters with nefarious sorcerers and big-pharma heads (ya, it’s true), Strange is left with only one drop of the stuff left. Of course, being a master magician, he could easily replicate it in his cauldron, but a new variable enters the mix - Strange’s man-servant Wong reveals to his master that he has an inoperable brain tumor, and on top of that has a stroke in a very inconvenient time and place. So, the doctor (and, hypothetically, we) are left with two questions:

1. If you had to choose between saving your friend and curing, say, AIDS or cancer, which would you choose? Certainly it would be cold-hearted to let your friend die, but what about all those children in Africa?

and,

2. Maybe more importantly, if you had access to the Panacea, would it be right to allow its use at all? Introducing a cure-all into the process of human evolution could cause numerous problems, and it is debatable whether the benefits would outweigh the costs.

So, chew on that for a while and let us know what you think (hint: use the comments feature!). As for what Dr. Strange decides, you’ll have to read the book.

A Danger Syndicate Blog?!

by Steven on

Yes is the answer to that shouted question you were asking! And I can prove the validity of my answer with the website structured around these words! Just look around you!

Jeff and I decided the comic just wasn’t enough and we decided that this blog would be the perfect way to distribute the ideas that don’t quite make it into comics, or the ideas that can’t even be drawn. The blog will update far more often than the comic (the comic updates four times a week–Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). If you’re looking for something extra to read, this would be the perfect thing to read!

Expect sketches, half-drawn comics, chronicles of our adventures, our somersaultingly mind-toasting ideas, weird stuff we find on the Internet, and more! Such as this sushi cake!

That’s all for now. Thanks for visiting, and read the comic!
